Writing Your First Screenplay

Create a screenplay document, learn proper formatting for Action, Character, and Dialogue. Use keyboard shortcuts and export to Final Draft.

Introduction

Screenwriting has specific formatting rules. Flik's screenplay editor handles all formatting automatically, so you can focus on storytelling.

Creating a Screenplay

In Agent mode, request: "Create a new screenplay"

The AI creates a properly formatted screenplay document that opens in the center panel.

Screenplay Elements

Press Tab to cycle through element types:

  • Scene Heading: INT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY
  • Action: What we see on screen
  • Character: WHO'S SPEAKING
  • Dialogue: What they say
  • Parenthetical: (how they say it)
  • Transition: FADE TO:

Formatting Rules (Automatic)

Flik handles all industry-standard formatting:

  • Scene headings: ALL CAPS, positioned left
  • Character names: ALL CAPS, centered
  • Dialogue: Centered under character
  • Action: Left-aligned, regular case
  • Page breaks: Automatic, industry-standard

Keyboard Shortcuts

  • Tab: Next element type
  • Shift+Tab: Previous element type
  • Enter: New line, same element
  • Cmd+S: Save (auto-saves every 30 seconds)

Exporting

Export to industry-standard formats:

  • PDF: For sharing and printing
  • Final Draft (.fdx): Import into Final Draft
  • Fountain: Plain text screenwriting format
